The Science behind Mind Mapping

Radiant Thinking

Radiant Thinking

P.K. Anokhin showed in ‘The Forming of Natural and Artificial Intelligence’ that the brain likes to work on the basis of association and it will connect every idea, memory or piece of information to tens, hundreds and even thousands of other ideas and concepts.
This is what a Mind Map does. Information is structured in a way that mirrors exactly how the brain functions – in a radiant rather than linear manner. A Mind Map literally ‘Maps’ out your thoughts, using associations, connections and triggers to stimulate further ideas. A Mind Map allows you to extract the ideas from your head and put them into something visible and structured.

Memory, Learning & Teaching

A 2002 study showed that Mind Mapping improved the long-term memory of factual information in medical students by 10%. The research by Farrand et al, illustrated that “Mind Maps provide an effective study technique when applied to written material” and are likely to “encourage a deeper level of processing for memory formation”.
The process of Mind Mapping involves a unique combination of imagery, colour and visual-spatial arrangement which is proven to significantly improve recall when compared to conventional methods of note-taking and learning by rote.
In addition to improved recall, the visibility of Mind Mapping provides an effective approach for promoting better understanding in students. It harnesses visual appeal through colour, symbols and images, and encourages students to make sense out of ideas by constructing them in meaningful ways.
In regards to Mind Mapping and teaching, a study conducted by Mento et al in 1999 showed that Mind Mapping brings a renewed sense of enthusiasm to the classroom because it encourages student confidence and sense of skill in mastering the assigned materials.

Creativity

Mind Maps are a brilliant tool for encouraging creativity and unleashing potential. According to Tony Buzan, the inventor of Mind Mapping, it enables you to generate ideas from one central idea, encouraging exploration of all the “creative possibilities” of the subject at hand whilst clearing the mind of “previous assumptions about the subject”.
Margulies explained in ‘Mapping Inner Space: Learning and Teaching Mind Mapping’, that before children learn a language, they visualise pictures in their minds which are linked to concepts. Unfortunately, once children are trained to write only words in one colour, on lined paper, their creative channels and mental flexibility diminishes. Using images, like Mind Maps, keeps this creativity fired up.
There are huge benefits when using Mind Mapping software for brainstorming sessions. The limitless canvas in Mind Mapping software gives you the freedom to add as many ideas as you need without the restricted dimensions of a piece of paper or a flip-chart. This means that your creative juices can flow easily, without interruption.

Presenting

Evidence has proven Mind Mapping to be a highly effective tool for interactive presentations. Mento et al found that executive students using only their Mind Map for presentations were more prepared to deal with challenging questions with confidence. They also had better recall of information because it had been captured and stored in an integrated, radiating manner rather than linearly. Students could internalise it easier because it was their unique representation of the information.

Using Mind Mapping software to deliver presentations, rather than the traditional method of flipcharts or slide shows, is an immediately refreshing change which engages audiences whilst encouraging participation.
These animated Mind Mapping presentations steer your audience along with your argument in a logical manner whilst maintaining sight of the bigger picture.
